Rebecca Villarreal

I like trying new things. Always have. In addition to photography, I’ve worked metal, resins, stone, clay, and textiles, and every time I get my hands on a new material I begin to test its limits, attempting to push it to places it was never meant to go. My work -or perhaps play- with photography has been no different. This body of work is the result of those experimentations with traditional photographic materials; nothing is digital. Many of the images are not film-based but are paper negatives from pinhole cameras or captured shadows from photograms. Other images began as film negatives but have been transformed through the sabatier technique, the selective application of developer, or both. Yet all of the images are explorations in possibility, concerned both with playful technique as well as with the fresh light those techniques can shine on the most mundane of subjects. Please feel free to ask for explanations of any of the techniques or subject matter you see represented. I print all images myself in the darkroom in limited editions. Color images are chromogenic prints; black-and-white are silver gelatin prints.
