Gillian Kemper

It is my custom to create from my sketches. Sometimes they are detailed large drawings, but often they are only brief notes scribbled in the back of a checkbook. Since I draw constantly, my finished images result from this wealth of material collected almost daily. In the studio, whether painting or printing, these brief records remind me of place, time or memory.

These watercolor still lifes involve a random collection of objects and images that clutter my home and studio. I’m addicted to drawing and sketching. It is similar to keeping a diary, only it is visual record. When searching for new ideas and material, I return again and again to my sketchbooks, eliminating, enhancing and combining drawings to create meaningful, whimsical or often absurd juxtapositions.

These painting are executed on rag paper in pencil, watercolor, gouache and ink utilizing multilayers of transparent color until final saturation and intensity is achieved.

All work is conceived and executed by me, Gillian D. Kemper.
