Erin Newton

The object in these pieces is to, contemplatively, hold it. “It” being the limited and layered concepts of our universe from my neophyte vantage point. Jumbled spheres we knew little of, have lead to blueberry kings and intellectual legends alike. Ideas and limitation from the mathematical proofs and “proofs” we have identified and labeled, coming from a simple and yet terribly complex species, are turned over repeatedly. The fruit, though simple, is also highly complex, layered and on a journey. The fruit is for anyone and so is its mystery and how much it will reveal to anyone. These are quiet conversations that mark a place in time where I am reading from my humble and simple station in life, books on physics and the philosophy of mathematics. I consider, as an individual, the fact that I have little credit or say in these matters due to the fact that I did not work through the standard man made system of professional schooling on either science, nor math nor art. I am no scholar. I do however like to flirt with the notion that these subjects still hold infinite mystery that may or may not reveal a secret or two to me. That I may have a right to them just as much as the next person. And nothing is revealed unless we spend a little time with it. What better way than to stare at a painting? It is a vessel of these internal conversations. All this paired with my forever mantra, from when I first picked up a paint brush years ago, “let paint be paint.” I begin with 7 or 8 colors. I mix and brush and aim to allow the natural to occur. Textures, “mistakes”, surprises, growth, knowledge and the steady solving of a mystery presented in a days work. A pendulum swings between predetermines and fatalism. What else out there is for no one but also for everyone?
