The process of creating this work can be broken down into 5 steps. 3D Modeling Development of a mathematical wire frame which serves as a virtual representation of any 3D object (eg: Chess Piece). This initial step is most closely related to sculpting and requires the use of a CAD-like application. Layout Objects are arranged in the same virtual space and positioned for the most compelling aesthetic composition. Lighting sources are determined at this stage. Mapping Bitmap Textures are created by the artist using 2D applications. Texture Maps are applied to the 3D wire frame models and represent both color and texture. Reflective and Refractive Maps are created by algorithms defined by the artist and account for virtual physical properties. Rendering Rendering converts the arranged models into an image through Ray Tracing. Ray Tracing is a technique for generating an image by tracing the path of light through pixels in an image plane. Essentially, the renderer compiles all the information input in the previous steps to output a hi-resolution 2D image. Renderings can take up to 40 hours of computational time. Printing The rendered image is imported into a 2D application where artifacts and artistic concerns are remedied and color correction is finalized. The image file is sent in-house to an 8-color archival ink, hi-resolution printer specialized for producing fine art prints on canvas. Images can take up to 2 hours to print. A protective UV coating is applied to the canvas to ensure longevity and durability.
