Ashley Bruegel

My paintings use a combination of oil, acrylic, grease pencil, drawing, pastel, collage and found objects to create large abstract paintings. The narrative qualities are an important aspect of my work, second only to their transformation from conception to completion. I portray humorous, lighthearted renditions of reality through the use of surface quality, line, color and shape. The bright, uplifting colors and playful lines are reminiscent of crayon drawings, which assist in creating a dynamic, uniquely child-like quality. The overlapping layers of drawing and painting not only give the paintings spatial depth, but they also aid in developing an interactive dialogue between the various forms that exist in the paintings. The expressive quality of line, texture and depth provokes comical undertones while the varying shapes and vivid colors envelop the audience in an exciting adventure that is a direct reflection of my life and personality.
