Randy Dana

My most recent work uses my large format camera to explore intimate details in a number of subjects – always a love for soft natural light, texture, little bits of eye candy. I work with seeds, pods, flowers, fruit and other organic and inorganic materials incorporating a variety of objects as content and backgrounds. My process is one of discovery, so I arrange for the possibility of happy accidents, sometimes over months, planting the cardoon, harvesting, watching the slow going to seed process. Then I bring ingredients together and explore the unfolding scene with my cameras big negative. I use 4×5 for the large format, best resolution, and remarkable detail and color negative film for great color latitude, and intense saturation. I scan the negatives and do all my own darkroom on the computer, using basic darkroom techniques, color balance correction, and density control. There is no digital alteration of the composition. Prints are archival inkjet, limited edition. Finally, I use traditional mounting, matting and framing.
