Brenda Benson

I accidentally discovered glass about 10 years ago after stumbling across a box of vintage 1960’s bifocal lenses. A trip to the local glass supplier for a lesson in construction methods opened a new door into light and color. The translucency, reflectivity, and refractive qualities of glass play a major role in the work I do today. Although a variety of mediums may be mixed in a single piece, it begins with the vision and is followed by a careful selection of materials. I often reuse objects that have been cast-out or otherwise overlooked. Fallen tree branches, tiny bits of glass, clay, and metal scrap may all become components in a finished piece.

Glass is especially important in my work because of its ability to project auras of color and energy in light. I am in love with color and use it as a bridge to my thoughts and ideas. Although the creative process is elusive, it frequently begins with a simple thought or feeling. Ideas are inspired by a word or phrase, a dream, a sunset, a sound, or a vista. I never know in advance where or when ideas will occur but accept them intuitively and allow my hands to do the thinking. Ultimately, every piece I create reflects my personal experiences and interactions in this world. My ideas are no more profound than any one else’s but my depictions are unique.
