Brady Willette

Freedom, the basis of founding America. Freedom of choice, of thought, of religion. As our country was settled, the American Indians were losing these freedoms. Through my series of The War Pony Project, I seek to make a contemporary connection between the Indian horse and the horse nation hoping to get the viewer to give some thought to our history with the American Indians. My nearly life size prints recall a time when horses were painted for protection and decorated to intimidate as they carried their warriors into battle. My process involves building relationships with individuals living in much different cultures and surroundings than I am used to. I do the shoots on location at the reservations of the West. Returning to my studio I then begin the process of tuning the best images, digitally painting new backgrounds and producing the limited edition prints on my 44″ archival printer.
