Barry Hendrickson

When I am drawn to the essential nature of a place, my goal is to express the meaning and bring some emotion to life in my photographs. Using the interpretive and emotive qualities of black and white, I strive to invoke this atmosphere and sense of places in my images.Influenced heavily by the legacy of the Zone System, my work begins at exposure with a previsualization of this image in black and white and how I will render this impression in the master print. Using large and medium formats, shooting with both traditional film and digital, all my work is personally processed and printed digitally in my studio. In the tradition of the fine print and with careful and conscious use of advanced technology, I work to develop print contrast in the digital darkroom to create rich velvety blacks and with and emphasis on relative tonal range. I attempt to bring a sense of depth to the image, so as to look in rather than at.To achieve the utmost print quality and permanence, all my photographs are carbon pigment prints on 100% acid free photo rag fine art paper. The image is signed and numbered in limited editions, and then matted and conservation mounted. My current body of work “Ireland in Black & White” is an ongoing series of the vast and surreal landscapes of Ireland. These though provoking and starkly beautiful panoramas both conceal and reveal the tragic and rich history of this land. This expanding series of images attempts to illuminate this sense of place.
