Barbara Nelson

I have always been a tinkerer and I have always loved jewelry. In 1991 I took a class in basic metalsmithing. My intention was to be able to use my own designs in my beaded jewelry, a life long hobby. So much for the beads! Today, my work is predominantly sterling silver with gold, bronze and copper. The use of mixed metals allows me to “draw” a design, and signature elements are incorporated in each piece. My work is intuitive and my designs are sculptural and contemporary. My pieces are hand fabricated. The process begins with a sheet of silver (or bronze) on to which a pattern is traced. After cutting out the shape, the edges are filed and hand stamped texturing is applied. Contrasting metal accent parts are crafted, fitted, cleaned and prepared for soldering. Multiple cleanings and soldering are usually required to complete a piece. Forming of the components takes place at each step along the way to becoming a finished piece of jewelry. Forming is accomplished using a combination of hammers, various mandrels and daps. The brushed finish is achieved, usually after being oxidized, by both machine and hand buffing. When complete, each piece is signed, and the series pieces are numbered. People are usually surprised by how comfortable my jewelry is. Having started out in apparel design, it is important to me that each piece becomes integral with the body. I don’t want my jewelry to wear someone; I want it to be worn.
