Anne London

All pieces start in a field sketchbook, usually in the African bush. Quickly drawn gestures there, composed and shaded images back in the studio. Extensive anatomical study, behavioral notations, 5 years art school, 46 years professional, but the emotive quality of line making is the beginning. Use classic materials, perhaps the oldest- charcoal, powdered pigments, stone dust and sometimes organic stains such as coffee. Subtractive methods as well- sanding, scoring, erasure also to make lines, tones. Experimental tools to apply as well- and often just my fingers to manipulate the materials.
