Kelly Gowan

Art to me is a combination of emotions that I experience through painting. I may paint a piece because of how I feel and decide I can capture that with color and light. Or I may start painting and not know what the outcome will be and in turn experience feelings from the process. Each piece is its own journey, and all for enjoyment. The emotion is often reflected in my titles. For example, my painting “Strength”, began with bright colors randomly placed, moved, blended, wiped away, added back in, using various methods from fingers to knives and spatters..but in the end it is an amazing tree, strong and full of movement. I do not want to limit myself to a style or type of painting, because for me it is a journey of exploration of the wonderful choices I have on mediums, colors, size, style, and subject matters. I paint what I think is beautiful. I have been told that my paintings are full of life, color and movement. They are ones that make you ponder, reflect, and feel something.

My family has a history of artists, and our walls are filled with oil paintings, pastels, charcoal, pen and ink, water colors and more. Being a stage III breast cancer survivor from 2005 has given me a new look on life. I am blessed enough to be able to paint as often as I want now. I grew up in DFW from preschool to 40 yrs old, going to Main Street days almost every year. I only recently stepped outside the area to Tyler, TX, just 2 hrs away, where I live on a lake, surrounded by nature. Painting in nature is truly a gift that is inspiring and adds a unique element to the process.
