Karla Hoover

I find inspiration in the world around me, especially when I travel. When I was a young girl, my family spent several weeks a year in Mexico, where my parents took me to shops that were filled with the most exquisite silver pieces of art coming out of Taxco. This is where I first fell in love with jewelry. My love of rocks and minerals developed as a result of me spending hours in the gem and jade rooms at the Chicago Field Museum. My dad would wait patiently as I stared entranced at sparkly faceted stones and carved vessels of jade.

Like many jewelers, I started in beads, moved to wire wrapping and chainmaille, into simple fabrication and so forth. I took my first basic fabrication classes in Chicago, but it wasn’t until I started attending classes at Austin Community College in Austin, Texas in the Fall of 2016 that I knew I wanted to become a professional jeweler. I’ve been working towards that goal ever since.

I enjoy the process of making something beautiful out of raw materials and try to keep some of that rawness in my designs, giving them an earthy quality. My pieces are made with mixed metals and combine various finishes, giving them contrasts in colors, textures, and patterns. My jewelry is bold yet minimalist in design. It is rustic yet refined and perfectly imperfect. I hope you enjoy wearing my pieces as much as I enjoy creating them.
