For the past fourteen years I have made linocuts of dense forest scenes. I believe these arise from a deep inner connection between nature and the human psyche. Using black ink on creamy white paper, I create images of trees and tangled underbrush that alternate with dappled or streaming sunlight. Like many artists before me, I use a photograph as a starting place or guide. From there I create a composition, a positive/negative image of white line and black line. This mirror/window dichotomy creates an energy that reflects both my experience and the world that surrounds us. When viewed from a distance, the images are alive with pictorial clarity. Up close, the surface teems with abstract shapes evoking timeless memories of walking through woods that resonate with our primal past.
