Carla M. Fox

I make pieces that have strong sculptural elements. Each of my metal pieces starts as flat sheets of precious metal & wire. These are all hand-fabricated, by myself. Many of the pieces are hollow-formed and soldered in a carefully choreographed sequence. Wood, ebony & holly, is a new addition to my work. I wanted to branch out from just metal, as well as have more freedom in exploring shapes, and patterns. I am also gilding some of my work with 23k gold leaf. My goal is to create jewelry that requires 2nd & 3rd looks to see all the small details.

I use a variety of tools to help me from a rolling mill, to a hand hydraulic press, pliers, hammers, files, forming stump. With each piece, even those in a series, I try to expand on the concept, push it further, explore the shape, and its relationship to others. My work is never static, always evolving.

I take great pride in making my own findings, clasps, and connectors. I want these simple details to be workable, durable, and an integral part of my designs.
